Recipes for Real Life Review and Giveaway

This week’s book I am very excited to introduce; Recipes for Real Life by Robin Cook. Unlike my past reviews, this book was self published by a woman from right here in Ontario making this cookbook a very unique addition for your kitchen!

About the Book

Robin Cook, the author, is from a small community in Ottawa Ontario. She grew up in the kitchen, learning to cook from her Mom making anything from simmering stews to baking bread. She loves to cook! Robin’s idea for her cookbook came from trying to find recipes that fit everyday real life. When you come home from work and haven’t the energy to think up what to make, this book will come to your rescue. All the recipes are simple, yet are fancy enough for that special dinner where you need to impress.“No artichoke hearts or capers required here- just food for real life”.

My Thoughts

This book has a recipe for everyone and everything! It’s divided into 12 sections including recipes for appetizers, salads, soups, vegetables, pasta, rice and beans, beef, chicken and pork, seafood, breads and muffins, cookies, cakes and finally pies. Most of the recipes can be made in 30 to 40 minutes, and many offer helpful tips of how to serve certain dishes to your taste, or how to prepare certain aspects of a meal the night before for easy preparation the next day. I love how Robin’s recipes all use ingredients that many of us already have at home. Flipping through the pages, I could already make many of these dishes without having to go to the grocery store. Some recipes include Italian Brushetta, Homemade Croutons, Virtually Fat Free Fries, Vegetarian Lasagna, Casserole for a Crowd, Seafood Skewers, Healthy Blueberry Muffins and a Never Fail Pie Crust. I even found my favourite home-made recipe that I love to make in the summer, Fresh Salsa, so I know that these recipes will be easy to make. I also like how this book is coil-bound and the pages have a gloss coating, a perfect companion for kitchen spills and splashes.

Book Highlight

This week I’ve decided to choose a dessert to try using the eggs from the farm, flour from Franz Seeberger, organic sugar and organic cocoa powder (found at Loblaw). I made this cake without the icing, but I have included the icing recipe for those who would like it.

MISSISSIPPI MUD CAKE- can easily serve 20 people

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 and 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat together butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in vanilla. Stir in flour, cocoa and salt. Fold in pecans. Pour batter into well-greased pan (I use a large lasagna pan). Bake 25-30 minutes. Cool.

Frosting:

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat all ingredients together until smooth and thick. If frosting is too think add more icing sugar. Spread thickly on cooled cake.
