Think Food, Think Local, Think Proud – Review and Giveaway

Now, this is a book of a different colour.  May I,  this week,  introduce you the one of the most peculiar cookbooks you will ever come by.   Think Food, Think Local, Think Proud by Claire Taylor, is a self published book through Lulu Enterprises Incorporated.

About The Book

“Heres an idea whats in the book, basically its a book about local and organic produce.  Talking about a few of the issues and debates happening and the people that do us proud to be British producers.  There is also a few recipes on the way and a space at the back to write your own. ENJOY”, states Taylor who is a student of graphic design in Bristol, England. There is an extremely colourful, artistic, and graphic feel to this book.  Attention all you proud Brits, and graphic design artists.  You will like this book! This busy book is all about local produce, mainly in the Devon and Kent areas of the United Kingdom, exploring a small number of local producers, their blogs and their recipes, as well as imagery and other recipes, plus your own cookbook section. Visiting some of the websites mentioned in this copulation of organic facts and information  brought me to one very interesting site in particular belonging to Riverford Farm http://www.riverford.co.uk/wash/cook/ where an abundance of interesting and unusual recipes were found.

My Thoughts

Not being British, I found this book a bit of a challenge, being that ingredients are measured in european metric instead of imperial measures, and the use of gas settings for the oven temperature a bit trick, however; Taylor nicely provides us with conversion temperatures.  I did enjoy the poem Ode to the 80 Meal by David Maff McLean and found it entertaining and hilarious. I discovered the Lemon Chicken Kebabs to be a recipe worth the effort.  A simple combination of butter, lemon juice, brown sugar and garlic brushed over boneless chicken on skewers.  A great grilling recipe.

Bev described this book as Jamie Oliver meets Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.  Kind of a blog, journal, food and sketch book all in one.  Taylor’s use of the english language and grammar have to be overlooked in this amusing find.  A Delightful read, especially if you read it with a “proper” english accent.

Book Highlight

TOMATO AND GARLIC SOUP – delish!

  • 1 clove garlic peeled and crushed
  • 1 1/2 pieces fresh bread (crust removed), soaked in 1 tbsp wine vinegar
  • 500 g tomatoes, halved
  • Iced water
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1/2 onion, halved
  • 75 ml sunflower oil, (olive oil)
  • Croutons to garnish

Cut the cucumber in half.  Dice one section and set aside for garnish.  Roughly chop the other half for the blender.  In a food processor, purée the tomatoes with 2 tbsp of iced water.  Put through a sieve if there are persistent lumpy bits.  Ad the soaked bread, chopped cucumber, garlic and onion with oil to the food processor and blend again.  Add more vinegar if a sharper flavour is desired.  Serve in chilled bowls, garnished with the diced cucumber and croutons.

    What I enjoy about eating organic: This past year and a half I have been on a personal journey of self betterment. I was 100 pounds over weight. I decided I needed to get back to the basics of healthy living. Through searching I was able to connect with organizations to help me get back on track. A big part of this was learning to really think about what I ate and why. Where did the food come from? Was it processed or grown naturally? What effects did processed food have on my body. This new knowledge opened my eyes to a better way of eating, of living. Since Shawn and I have been eating organically, we both feel better. We feel better in all ways.
